"Short Takes: Illustrators' show enlightening" - by Mary Thomas, Post-Gazette Art Critic

The Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators is the latest group to become a resident member guild of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and is showing work by some of its 82 members in an introductory exhibition, "Every Picture Tells a Story."

While they regularly exhibit together, here the group gives more insight to the variety of working processes individual members employ by showing original artwork alongside the practical application to which it was put.

Among these are book covers, magazine article illustrations, greeting cards and a paint can label in media that include acrylic, gouache, colored pencil and watercolor.

These are all pros, but some pieces stand out: Mark Klingler's cover illustration of Ha Drocodium Wui for the May 25, 2001, issue of Science; John Ritter's CD covers for Springsteen and Jason Ingram albums; Kathy Rooney's digital proof of a mural created for the home office of the Steelers on the South Side; and a storyboard fragment from the animated film "Yerek" by Maria Cherkasskaya for Filmstudio "Ukranimafilm," Kiev, Ukraine.

The exhibition continues through Aug. 18. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. For information, call 412-361-0873.
